food (glorious food of Kelate)

Assalamualaykum.

If some of you notice, in my Alma Mater's blog nowadays there seem to have a discussion on Kelantan in almost every comment of the previous entries.
The people, the dialects and obviously its (glorious and yummy) food.
I was browsing the Net to find pictures of "akok" for K Ruby when I found this fotopages.
http://raykinzoku.fotopages.com/
It's a Kelantanese fotopage where the author diplays his (or is it her?) collection of Kelate pictures.
The buildings in KB, the billboards (with models wearing tudung and Jawi font) etc.
And of course, my favourite is "Jalae-jalae Carghi Makae pt 1+2" (Jalan-jalan Cari Makan).
Looking at those pictures, made me homesick.
(Yeah, I'm only 1 1/2 hour away from KB but still, I miss Kelate so much!)

To K Ruby, this is especially for you:

The akok's from Nik Yam, and it's delicious. (I think my sister usually buys akok from this makcik.)
But the best from Nik Yam is obviously the "Murtabak diRaja" (Royal Murtabak).
The murtabak has I think about 5 layers, it's so thick (about 1 1/2 inches) and has a lot of filling.
*gulp*
(my,my...I'm drooling~)

And according to raykinzoku, the best ayam perchik is not the ones from the famous Yati Ayam Perchik (as opposed to mr seen_er's opinion and mine too).
But they are from Kak Nah's Ayam Perchik.
(Yes, I also am not familiar with it, but I'll look for it after this.)
By the way, this is Kak Nah (I think) and her mouth-watering Ayam and Ikan Perchik.

Looks yummmmmmy? Slurpppppppppp~
Anyway, the kuih in the plastic container is "wajik" I think.
Or known as "nasi manis" to the Kelantanese.
That was my arwah Tok We's special.

Fyi, when I was surfing the net, I found an interesting blog.
The author is from Terengganu if I'm not mistaken.
He translated Chairil Ahmad's poem into Terengganu dialect and 'twas hilarious.
Funny, but I'll write more about it next week.

My students have just finished their UPSR trials, and I'm off to Kota Bharu in a few minutes.
Gonna visit "Pesta Makanan" at Stadium Sultan Muhammad IV with my sister.
He he he he.

Wassalam.

p/s: Don't worry K Ruby and Seen_er, I'll eat the akoks for you. LOL

I got to go now, but will peek again later at those yummies. I must be a masochist loving torturing myself like this...ha ha ha.

  3. Fizzy,

Alamak... it so happened that when I looked at your blog, I did not have my lunch today (it's 6.15pm and yours truly is still at the office...sigh...)

Yeap, I actually brought back like ten of the murtabak (frozen, of course) during last ramadan and lasted me almost a month!

  5. Idya:

Yup, I remembered the incident. Poor kid la, I know the murtabak's damn good, but you should've bertolak ansur laa..
    [Hehehe..pandai cakap je ke?]

    K Ruby:

I can look for the ingredients for you. But bet it won't be the same if we cook the akok ourselves. Here (in Kelate) they use very traditional utensils to make them. I think the same ones used to bake bahulu.

    (mysterious)Seen_er:

Poor you. But glad to be the bad girl! He he he. I arrived safely in KB on thursday and picked up my sis at Billion. Then we went straight to Pesta Makanan. Found unique and delicious delicacies from Siam. I'll share it later. (If I manage to simpan the food for the 'photo session'. LOL)

Oh, so you're familiar with that murtabak? Yummy, kan???? (Aiyaaaa, yours truly telan air liur already.)

    Deya:

Come back soon and drop by Kelate. I'll cook you good food. =)

  11. True! Nik Yae's akok is fantabulous. Totally changed my view abt it, much unlike KL's so called akoks that taste like wet bauhulus.

I got them after reading raykinzoku's blog too.
